Set aside a 'car bag' that can go as hand luggage and pack it with everything you need for the journey.

Which side is the gas cap on?
Does the car require leaded or unleaded fuel, and do I know the foreign words for them?
Where and when will my first stop be?
Have I checked the weather conditions ahead?
Has the car rental office got any suggestions on my route?
Is the water bottle filled, and has everyone had a chance to use the restroom?
Have I bought a local phone card or tokens? Do I need local currency for tolls?
